Trade in Northern Thai Communities
(เครื่องชั่ง และลูกชั่ง–การค้าในชุมชนภาคเหนือของประเทศไทย)
The trade within Northern Thailand and nearby areas was limited mostly to food, textiles and medicines. Since these commodities were sold by weight, there had to be standard scales accepted by the community. This gave rise to standard systems of weight measurement in addition to those for measuring length and capacity. The weights and the balances in which they were used are considered to be important folk inventions. Those made for use in a large-sized balance are called “yachu”, while those for a small balance are called “yoi”. Apparently, since the establishment of opium plantations in the early 1900s, the animal weights have been used to weight opium as well as other commodities. Today, they are commonly called “opium weights”.
การค้าของชุมชนในภาคเหนือของประเทศไทยและบริเวณใกล้เคียง สิ่งของที่ซื้อขายกันส่วนใหญ่เป็นธัญญาหาร เครื่องนุ่งห่ม ยารักษาโรค ดังนั้นการซื้อขายจึงจำเป็นต้องคิดประดิษฐ์เครื่องชั่งน้ำหนักขึ้นมา โดยให้มีมาตรฐานเป็นที่ยอมรับกันในภายในกลุ่มนอกเหนือจากการตวงและการวัด อุปกรณ์สำคัญในการชั่งคือเครื่องชั่งหรือตราชู ซึ่งถือเป็นภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่นที่สำคัญ เครื่องชั่งที่มีขนาดใหญ่จะเรียกว่า “หย่าจู” ขณะที่เครื่องชั่งที่มีขนาดเล็กจะเรียกว่า “ยอย” หรือ ตัวยอย นับตั้งแต่มีการปลูกฝิ่นในราวกลางพุทธศตวรรษที่ 25 เป็นต้นมา ก็มีการนำลูกชั่งรูปสัตว์มาช่วยในการชั่งฝิ่นเช่นเดียวกับสินค้าอื่นๆ จากประโยชน์เช่นนี้จึงกลายมาเป็นชื่อที่ใช้เรียกกันในปัจจุบันว่า ลูกชั่งฝิ่น

Chinese ceramics have the longest history of development and production of any ceramics in the world. They have been an important model for ceramics produced in the Southeast Asian countries. With their special characteristics and high quality, Chinese ceramics from multiple manufacturing sites in China have been exported to many parts of the world for centuries. Chinese ceramics found in Thailand were exported from several kilns in China from the late Tang through Qing dynasties.
เครื่องถ้วยจีนเป็นเครื่องถ้วยที่มีพัฒนาการด้านการผลิตยาวนานกว่าเครื่องถ้วยอื่นๆในโลก และเป็นเครื่องถ้วยแม่แบบให้กับเครื่องถ้วยประเทศต่างๆในแถบเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ เนื่องจากเครื่องถ้วยจีนมีลักษณะเด่นที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ของตนเอง ตลอดจนมีคุณภาพดีกว่าเครื่องถ้วยชนิดอื่นๆ จึงทำให้ได้รับความนิยมจากลูกค้าอย่างมาก และมักค้นพบตามพื้นที่ต่างๆทั่วโลก เครื่องถ้วยจีนที่พบในประเทศไทยมีหลากหลายรูปแบบ ถูกนำเข้ามาจากหลายแหล่งผลิตในประเทศจีนนับตั้งแต่ปลายสมัยราชวงศ์ถังถึงสมัยราชวงศ์ชิง
